Where's Jim? Gone to Disney World!

A couple weeks ago we told you about Jim Ryun's vacation to Hawaii in December to glad-hand marathon runners in Honolulu. All of us here hoped he'd gotten that kind of ego-stroking out of his system.

Well, hope in one hand...

This time, the former Olympian and poor excuse for a congressman will be participating in a seminar on Saturday in the lead up to a marathon at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

At least he's staying on the continent this time.

jesus, jim...if you want to do the whole speaking circuit thing, why are you running for congress again?

put us all out of your misery.

Jim Ryun, the running legend, is the honorary starter for two races. This proves what?...that he still loves the sport in which he excelled, and is now giving back? What a non-story. If Nancy had (or has...I don't mean to imply that she for sure doesn't) any world-class accomplishments, I'd expect her to give back to the community that afforded her that accomplishment as well.

Do you really believe that Ryun is "giving back" to the running community? He's not "giving back" anything to anybody--he's getting paid to speak to the runners.

Why would Jim need to get paid for this? He's already paying himself out of his campaign account. He's received "mileage reimbursements" or about $40K and even uses that account to pay for drinks at Kwik Shop.

I have no problem whatsoever with Jim doing this. The problem is, 1) he gets paid for these speaking engagements (to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars a year) but reimburses himself for the mileage, meaning his campaign donors are paying for him to get go get paid. 2) He needs to decide whether he is a former world-class athlete who does the speaking circuit or a candidate for Congress. The people of the 2nd district deserve someone who is a full-time representative, not someone who gallavants across the country signing autographs.

Sooooo Jim Ryun is not supposed to be earning a living while he is running for Congress?????

Don't Lynn Jenkins and Nancy Boyda have other jobs while they are running for Congress?

Seems a little hypocritical.

Is Ryun really taking money from his campaign accounts to pay for non-campaign travel? If that's true, isn't it illegal? Or can candidates do whatever they want with that money?

If he hosts a fund raiser while in Orlando, which I'm sure he will, he can use campaign funds for travel. But I'd bet Disney is taking care of his travel arrangements.

Jenkins should resign if she wants to run for Congress.

And, no, Boyda was self employed when she ran.

Anonymous said...

But Boyda isn't self-employed now, she holds political office. If Lynn Jenkins is incapable of doing her current job and running for Congress ..... I guess that means Boyda is incapable of doing her current job and running for Congress .... maybe she should resign.

When you can show Jenkins is not doing her job as State Treasurer then you can complain .... otherwise shut up.

i've always believed people should be required to resign their current office if they seek a new one- just like they do in Arizona. That'd apply to Jenkins but not Boyda.

Bob Dole had the respect for the people of Kansas to resign as US Senate before he ran for President. If Lynn wants to be in Congress, she should resign now.

So did Sebelius resign from insurance commissioner to run for governor? Refresh my memory?

Anonymous said...

no, she didn't...but she should have.

Anonymous said...

If Sebelius is somehow picked as a VP candidate ..... will she step down as Governor immediately and will you push for her to if she doesn't?

Anonymous said...

that'd be fine...because we'd still have a Democratic governor

Unless Lynn Jenkins is reimbursing herself for her mileage to drive to the office, your argument doesn't fly.

Ryun gets around it because he holds fundraisers in the towns that he goes to for these events. Its legal by the letter of law, but certainly not by the intent.
