Boyda holds forums, helps senior citizens

Congresswoman Nancy Boyda held a series of forums dedicated to answering questions relating to Medicare across the district this week, including one in Columbus (in the extreme southeastern corner of the state) that was covered by The Joplin Globe.

It's a long article, and a good one, detailing many of the problems our senior citizens face while trying to facilitate a basic need: getting their medicine.

Here's an excerpt:

Boyda said President Bush and many Republicans in Congress want to cut funding for services to senior citizens, but she said he would fight to prevent it.

“In December, you’re going to see some showdowns on the House and Senate floor,” she said.

Boyda said that in comparing plans that are offered, one should keep in mind that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. She said 52 plans are offered to Kansas residents under the Medicare drug plan.

“The marketplace can be pretty brutal, honestly,” she said. She said a company’s profit motive doesn’t always coincide with what is the common good.

Boyda also reiterated her belief Medicare should be able to negotiate with drug companies for cheaper prices- a no-brainer solution to a massive problem that the Republicans in Congress and the White House continue to ignore.

According to the official site, a total of five forums were held.

Im glad to see her sticking up for seniors with Medicare, who are not getting the attention they deserve right now.. So many seniors on medicare are having to deal with increasing premiums at the time in their life when they need medical attention the most!! All the while, the major insurance companies sit back and collect the money.. This is why AARP has set up http:// www.thisissoridiculous.com so that we can sign a petition to make our voice heard. They also have updated news, video and while your there you can e-mail your congressman to let him know how you feel! Medicare is an important issue in the US right now, and we really need to be heard on this, or it’s just going to get more and more out of hand!

How can Boyda square her large contributions from pharmacuetical companies with her wanting to have medicare meds go out for bid? The same companies that are giving her money are the ones that don't want it to go to bid. Is she talking out of both sides of her mouth?

what contributions are you talking about? boyda's didn't take any more from drug companies in 06 or 07...

In reading this blog I would like to know specifically how has she helped senior citizens? Having forums help them???? Where is the legislation?

By the way .... AARP is also a very large insurance company (including Medicare D) who was key in getting the current Medicare prescription drug plan passed. Funny how they are critiquing now the plan they helped push through and benefitted from financially. Many organizations who represent seniors said this whole Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage legislation was a mess. Those groups pointed out the problems that are now happening and wanted them fixed before passing the legislation.

well, since boyda wasn't in office when the plan was pushed through, she's part of the group trying to make sure it gets fixed now.

read the article- the forum was designed to answer questions about Part D. Anyone who went and had a question answered was helped.

Kind of a broad definition of help ....listening to a question.

Hearing from people who were there told me it was pretty broad information not much for answers to those who had problems with the Medicare D program.

my grandmother said the exact opposite...her specific question got an answer.

She didn't answer the questions ..... staff from an organization in Manhattan that serves seniors helped with answering any specific questions. I think they were from the area agency on aging.
